Types of Boiler
There are four main types of boiler available; regular, combination, cooker or condensing.

Regular Boilers
Regular boilers are sometimes referred to as ‘conventional’ or ‘heat only’ boilers and can be either wall mounted or floor-standing. Space heating only is provided, so if you want the system to supply hot water as well, it needs to be connected to a separate hot water storage system.  Oil-fired back boilers with a (usually electric
powered) ‘fuel effect’ fire on the front can be installed in a fireplace.

Combination Boilers
Combination or combi boilers provide both space and hot water heating.  Most oil-fired units are ‘storage combis’ and have an internal hot water store.  Although there’s an ever-ready flow of hot water, it’s supplied at a lower rate than in regular systems.  They may, therefore, be unsuitable for homes that require simultaneous demands for hot water i.e. those with multiple bathrooms.

On the plus side, combi boilers do save space as they are fed directly from the water main and have no need for a hot water storage cylinder or cold water feed cistern.

They are usually intended for use in a sealed system which does not require a feed-and-expansion cistern, thus allowing a dry roof space.

Before selecting a combi boiler, it is worth checking the manufacturers’ instructions to ensure your home has both satisfactory water pressure and an adequately-sized water supply pipe.  Otherwise, the hot water service may not be adequate.

Oil Boiler Installation

Cooker Boilers
Some oil-fired cookers come with either an integral or separate hot water boiler.  Most current units have two burners; one for heating and hot water, the other, which has an independent control, for cooking.

The casings of these cooker boilers tend not to be that heat efficient and have quite a high heat loss.  Whilst this can give useful space heat during winter months, it is not such a boon during the summer. Condensing units are not available.

Condensing Boilers
Condensing boilers should always be considered as first choice by customers as they are the only types that meet with Best Practice requirements.

As from April 1st 2005, it became a requirement of building regulations in England and Wales that newly installed oil-fired boilers must have a completed boiler exception form.

In fact, apart from in a few exceptional cases, from April 1st 2007, all boilers installed must be condensing, with a SEDBUK efficiency of 86% or more.  You may even be eligible for a grant to assist with the extra installation cost.

Most domestic oil-fired condensing boilers run on kerosene and SEDBUK efficiencies of 86-97% can be achieved.  New condensing oil boilers have an average efficiency of 93%, compared with 85% for a new non-condensing boiler and 60-70% for older types.

There are many types of condensing boiler available.  Most are floor standing, but room-sealed and open-flue models are available and combination boilers are now being introduced.  Although they need a connection from the condensate outlet to a drain, they are easy to install and will fit all modern fully-pumped systems.

One thing to be aware of is that a plume of water vapour is usually present during boiler operation.  This is completely normal, but some care and consideration needs to be taken when siting the flue terminal.  However, a range of extended flue options can be purchased that make the visible plume less likely to be a nuisance.

Installation Standards
Chalder Engineering Ltd is proud to be a member of OFTEC.  OFTEC is the technical authority for the oil appliance industry.  It sets the standards of performance, efficiency and safety to which all manufacturers must comply.  All the boilers we supply are installed to meet OFTEC’s stringent standards.  Additionally, we comply with all the relevant building regulations (such as part L) and inform the local authority of the replacement and installation of your new boiler.  They will then send out compliance certificates that can be used in the home information pack scheme.

Chalder Engineering Ltd are approved installers for the following manufacturers:

  • Worcester Bosch
  • Warmflow Engineering
  • Trianco
  • Firebird

New Boiler Commissioning
Chalder Engineering Ltd commission all new boiler installations as per the manufacturer’s recommendations. We also complete a CD11 commissioning report each boiler installation is logged online with OFTEC to comply with Building Regs. All boiler manufacturers’ paperwork is completed to register the boiler Guarantee. Once the boiler is commissioned our engineers will explain to the client how the controls work.
