Electrical Inspections and Tests

Periodic Inspection and Testing
It is imperative that your company undertakes regular electrical inspections and tests. By law, you must take precautions against the risk of death or personal injury from electricity in work activities (Electricity at Work Regulations 1989).  Neglecting faulty electrical systems could result in injuries to your employees, lost income or even fines if you are found in breach of your statutory responsibilities. In some instances it may even invalidate your insurance claims.

All electrical installations should be subject to Periodic Inspection and Testing to prevent:

  • Damage through wear and tear
  • Corrosion
  • Excessive electrical loading
  • Ageing
  • Environmental influences

Legislation requires that certain electrical installations are maintained in a safe condition and therefore must be periodically tested. It is a requirement implied by licensing authorities, public bodies, insurance companies, mortgage companies and landlords.

Periodic Inspection and Testing should be considered for the following reasons:-

  • To assess compliance with the current IEE Wiring Regulations
  • Change of ownership or tenancy of the premises
  • Change of use of the premises
  • After alterations to the original installation
  • Because of any significant change in the electrical loading of the installation
  • Where there is a reason to believe that damage may have been caused to the installation

The maximum periods allowed between Periodic Inspections are as follows:-

  • Commercial installations - 5 years
  • Industrial installations - 3 years
  • Buildings open to the public - 1 year
  • External installations - 3 years
  • Caravan parks - 1 year
  • Fire alarms - 1 year
  • Short term installations - 3 months
  • Site installations - 3 months

Chalder Engineering Ltd can carry out all your testing requirements and issue you with all the necessary certification you will need.  We will even send you reminders just before your certificates run out to ensure you are covered at all times.

Portable Appliance Testing (Pat Testing)
Chalder Engineering Ltd carries out inspection and testing for both fixed and portable equipment to the current IEE code of practice.  This test is mainly applicable to the workplace to meet the requirements of the following legislation:-

  • Health and Safety At Work Act 1974
  • Provision and Use Of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
  • Electricity At Work Regulations 1989

Testing is carried out using the latest state of the art appliance testers.  We then issue an easy-to-read, fully detailed professional report that comes complete with labels for all your appliances.  Any minor repairs such as loose plug top connections or the replacement of incorrect fuses are carried out there and then.  This service is supplied free of charge, so avoiding a further re-test visit.  Re-test reminders are sent out automatically approximately one month before the next re-test is due.

Emergency Lighting Inspection and Testing to BS 5266-1
Chalder Engineering Ltd can provide Inspection and Testing to BS5266-1:2005 complete with certification and re-test reminders if so required.  Should your emergency lighting not be up to standard, we can also arrange to carry out any repairs or remedial work that may be required.

Fire Alarm Testing to BS 5839 & BS 5306
The servicing of fire detections systems should be carried out on a quarterly basis.  All servicing should be carried out by trained engineers to meet the current British Standards.  Chalder Engineering Ltd will provide you with a servicing log book and certificates after each service, thus ensuring that your business is fully covered and compliant.  We will then schedule quarterly visits to make sure the appropriate alarm maintenance is upheld.

Entertainment License Electrical Testing
In areas where public entertainment takes place, there is usually a requirement for an annual test & inspection of that area involving the entertainment electricity supply and area emergency lighting.  Sometimes it can be the entire electrical wiring system that needs checking.

In most cases, this is a necessary requirement from the Licensing Department of the Local Authority.  They specify that the inspecting contractor must be approved by the NICEIC or ECA and must comply with the regulations of the IEE.

The definition of a public event requiring entertainment licence testing is any kind of entertainment into which a passer-by or member of the public can be admitted by payment or otherwise.

Our fully qualified electricians carry out all the necessary testing and provide all the certification required by the local government to enable the duty holder to satisfy these requirements.
